West Virginia CNA certification requirements are similar to most other states, and follow federal recommendations as to who is eligible to complete the certification process. In West Virginia a person wishing to proceed with CNA training must be at least 18 with a completed high school degree or GED. Individuals who cannot pass a background check, medical exam or TB test need not apply. CNA classes in West Virginia are in depth but can usually be completed in a matter of 6 to 8 weeks. According to the Office of Health Facility Licensure & Certification (OHFLAC) website, there are 113 state approved options for CNA classes throughout West Virginia. Charleston and Huntington have many options for those wishing to take CNA classes in WV, as they are the largest populated cities in the state. Training facilities range from high schools to tech and community colleges, to health care facilities and medical centers teaching classes themselves.
CNA classes in West Virginia have to meet a minimum course hour requirement of 120 hours. Several of these hours are done on site, learning skills in a hands-on real medical environment, while the majority of the course hours are completed in the classroom. After completing the training hours, CNA students will then need to register for the state test which is applied for through the Professional Healthcare Development in West Virginia. The test costs $100, and along with the application for the test, a CNA perspective is required to submit all supporting documents which prove they have passed all minimum requirements and successfully completed all training hours. The Professional Healthcare Development will process the application and if all is in order they will send you a test date, time and place. People who pass the 2 part test are automatically placed on the West Virginia Nurse Aide Registry, no further steps are needed. If they do not pass the test, a person will need to re-take the West Virginia state CNA exam.

Those who appear on the West Virginia CNA Registry are eligible to begin applying for CNA work. The purpose of the West Virginia CNA Registry is to provide a database for West Virginia medical centers and nursing homes to be able to verify a person’s credentials prior to hiring them for work. All of these guidelines are setup to ensure the quality of care for West Virginia patients and residents. At any point if a person is convicted of neglect or abuse, they will be removed from the registry and their CNA certification will be revoked. A person who has had their registration revoked will not be permitted to be re-certified in West Virginia or any other state. CNA work is a great responsibility, and needs to be handled with great care.
