The Maine Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for setting the standards a person must meet in order to qualify as a CNA. A person must be 16 years old to enroll in CNA courses in Maine, they also must be able to pass a background check. In addition to these requirements, a person in Maine must also undergo a physical exam by a Dr. and pass a TB screening. This is to prevent the spread of disease within the state, as Certified Nursing Assistants often work with those who are sick, elderly, or have compromised immune systems.

If a person meets these requirements they may pursue CNA courses in Maine to begin their training. The CNA programs in Maine can be found through local community colleges, tech schools and even the Red Cross in some areas. The training will be a total of 180 hours for Maine candidates. 70 of these hours are completed at a medical facility. These clinical hours are where a person practices the information they learned in the classroom and lab. Lab hours consist of 20 of the 180 hours, the rest are spent in the classroom. This exam will test all the skills they learned throughout their training. 1 part of the test is multiple choice questions, while the other part of the test is actually performing the skills in front of an examiner.
